Diesel (B7) 179.9p 185.9p 6.0p

The unleaded gap rose 0.2p over the month, from 3.8p to 4.0p. A supermarket forecourt is not automatically the cheapest in a town — the spread within one postcode area is wider than the gap between these two groups — but on the national picture the difference is consistent.

The motorway premium

Motorway service area forecourts charged 27.0p a litre more for unleaded than forecourts elsewhere at the end of March 2026, and 10.0p more for diesel. On a 55-litre fill that is £14.85 of unleaded, and £238.95 a year for a driver filling up exclusively on the motorway.

Who moved first

The national median rose over March 2026, first crossing a penny from where it started on 3 March. Each brand below is shown against the day its own median first moved a penny in the same direction. This is the measure behind the Competition and Markets Authority's finding that pump prices rise quickly and fall slowly.

Maxol 2 March EG On The Move 9 March
Circle K 2 March Spar 6 March
Jet 2 March Welcome Break 6 March
Gleaner 2 March Asda 5 March
Tesco 3 March Essar 5 March
Morrisons 3 March Asda Express 5 March

A brand with few forecourts in a region can move on paper because of where its sites are rather than because of a pricing decision. Brands with fewer than 20 forecourts are left out for that reason.
